A full 2 days after my finish at the Shenandoah Mountain 100 I finally learn my result. 2nd place Masters in 8:36:54. That's 35 minutes faster than my 2008 finish, which was my only other attempt at this race. I feel really happy with the result. :-)

The SM100 is right up there at the top of the list on the NUE calendar when it comes to that sketchy, rocky, east coast style singletrack trail which is kinda like my kryptonite. But, on the plus side, the SM100 also has tons of Herriman-friendly fireroad climbs, so I was still hopeful to be competitive. The race started out great and I made it over the first big climb of the day with no issues. Starting out on the second big climb of the day (mile 12) it was the top three masters in the NUE series (Doug Andrews, Roger Masse, and myself) riding wheel to wheel on the trail. I was the first to drop off as I struggled to keep the bike on the trail in the steep rocky singletrack. I would catch back up to Roger with a flat tire at about mile 20. On the next road I saw a little black bear run across the road about a hundred feet in front of me. That was pretty cool. From there on Roger and I swapped spots several more times as he flatted a second timeand would catch back up in the technical trail. The race seemed to pass by very quickly for me and was mostly uneventful from there until I happened across my good buddy Mike Simonson who'd had a wicked crash. Mike was with medical aid crew and was waiting for a four-wheeler to get him out of the woods. He gave me a message to relay to Michelle that he was just scraped and banged up (I think he was lying to me). It was a scary moment for sure and put things into a different perspective. I finished up the race and then discovered Mike had been air-lifted out. Yikes! Michelle and I packed things up and drove the 60 miles to join Mike in the ER. I missed being able to chat with friends after the race but obviously there are some things that are more important.

This was my 2nd Mohican 100, with the first being the scary tornado threatened mudfest last year. I liked today's blue skys and dry trail way, way, better!! After this year's Cohutta 100 NUE Master's result it seemed pretty clear to me that Roger Masse and Doug Andrews were going to be the top Master riders this year and today's race seemed to confirm this as most of the day I rolled in third behind these 2 guys. I spent about 65 miles of today's race, riding with a 29er crew single-speed teammate Jason Pruitt. Jason kept the efforts tough on the climbs which he basically has to do on the big gear he was running and I tried to keep us moving along on the flats. Entering the last section of single-track at about mile 90 I was surprised to catch up to Roger Masse. Roger had a little bobble on this trail and I went around. About 5 seconds later I slipped on some loose stuff and went down myself. It was my first time on the ground all day. I passed Roger again a couple minutes later and tried my best to put in an effort to make the pass stick and I was able to stay ahead by just a minute at the finish. Doug was waiting for us there and let us know he had to DNF after missing a turn and getting way off course so it ended up the win for me today. I can't say I believe the 2011 NUE Master's hierarchy changed at all today, but these are long tough races and I guess anything can happen.

Coming from Michigan where winter wont quit this year, today's Cohutta 100 weather was spectacular! Blue skies, 80 degrees, and dry dirt under the wheels felt awesome.

The Race: I might need to check my clock on my bike computer. The race started at 6:56 by my clock and I'd only arrived about a minute before, whew. Pace seemed way higher to me this year rolling from the start and I quickly felt like my tires were flat. It took a while but I finally found my groove by about mile 20 and from there I felt pretty good. I ended up rolling with Kuhncapi for about 35 miles which was nice. Greg fell off the lead group with flatting rear tire . He actually ended up winning an award for the most flat tires on the day. Of course, by the end, everyone gets tired and so that finish line looked glorious. I ended up 3rd in Masters behind Doug Andrews from California and my Trek 29er Crew teammate Roger Masse. Hopefully I ride closer to these guys at my next NUE race. I was pretty far off today.
